Away from the millionaire mansions and expensive beaches of Sardinia's north coast are the Sardinian mountains, lair of an unsubmissive, clannish, and hard people with no love of the law. In these flinty mountains a murder has been committed. The victim, Oscar Burolo, had built an impregnable villa with the latest in high-tech surveillance. But an assassin had somehow slipped throught, and now Burolo's dead. Aurelio Zen of the Ministry of the Interior has been assigned to the case, but the list of suspects soon develops into a dangerous rougues' gallery of neoterrorists, Machiavellian politicians, and artistic son, a venal co-worker, and a perverted lion tamer - all with ample reason to kill the victim... and the police investigaro. For as Zen get closer to the solution, a killer gets closer to him.
